LCOYHK 2023

Local Conference of Youth Hong Kong 2023

The Local Conference of Youth Hong Kong 2023 took place on September 23rd to 24th, with over 130 local youth participants. The summit was organized by CarbonCare Innolab, in collaboration with Hong Kong Youth Climate Action, Network of Environmental Student Societies and V’air. The event was endorsed by YOUNGO, the official youth and children organization under the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, and was supported by Hang Seng Bank as part of the Low Carbon Future SolarCare Program.

The venue for LCOY 2023, Breakthrough Youth Village, was equipped with a solar power system, which is in line with the aim to actively promote the use of renewable energy in climate education. Participants had the opportunity to visit the solar power system facilities and gain more understanding in solutions to mitigation.

The opening ceremony of LCOY 2023 was attended by guests including Mr. Chong Chan Yau, Co-founder and CEO of CCIL, Mr. Wong Chuen Fai, Commissioner for Climate Change of the Environmental Protection Department, and Miss Natalie Chung, Member of the Carbon Neutrality and Sustainable Development Committee. The theme of this year's Hong Kong Youth Climate Summit was "Youth for a Livable City." Under this theme, youth groups and organizations conducted a series of workshops, seminars, sharing sessions, and experiential activities, using different means to explore how to create a livable city in the face of climate change.

Under the sub-theme "Urban Resilience and Adaptation", sessions held included (1) Interactive Workshop: Community Design for Climate Resilience organized by Community Climate Resilience Concern Group (CCRCG) and Healing Parks, (2) the "Master of Urban Development" and (3) Disaster Preparedness in Local Community: Cases Sharing, host by Hong Kong Red Cross. Under the sub-theme "Climate and Health", sessions held included (1) “Topical Sharing: Climate Hazard and Workers’ Safety in Outdoor Working Environment", in which the Association for the Rights of Industrial Accident Victims Limited and the Cleaning Workers Union participated in discussions; and (2) Interactive Game: Card Game on Understanding the Scientific Story of Climate Change". An event related to the sub-theme "Nature Based Solution" is a guided on-site tour titled "Urban Greenery and Climate Change" conducted by V’air. Under the sub-theme "Youth Empowerment", there were several events, including (1) Youth Dialogue on Climate Change hosted by Hong Kong Youth for Climate Actions, (2) the launch of the "COP Toolkit" and (3) a climate music sharing by ClimateXart. Additionally, through organizing events like the “Green Jobs Human Library”, featuring representatives from the green industry, LCOY 2023 strengthens young people’s connection with the sustainability field and inspires them to engage in green careers.

In the final session, 70 participants gathered to draft the Hong Kong Youth Position Paper on Climate Change 2023. This position paper will be submitted to YOUNGO and will become part of the global youth statement 2023 in preparation for COP 28.
