Climate Advocacy Training for Youths (CATY) raise the awareness of Hong Kong youth on sustainable development policies and international climate events. The training and direct experience will be designed to equip them to play a more effective role in international conferences, debates and institutional processes on climate and sustainability issues. Outstanding students will be selected as youth delegates of Hong Kong to participate in the international climate forums, like 2022 Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27), Youth4Climate or Asia-Pacific Climate Week.
Training Syllabus
This course aims to empower youths who are motivated by the vision of a sustainable world and aspire to be climate advocates against the climate emergency. Participants will learn from leaders, experts and youth advocates from Hong Kong and overseas and will gain valuable and relevant climate advocacy skills.
Students will come away with :
- Understanding of the international conventions, agreements, multilateral organizations on climate change and related major environmental and social issues.
- How you can make your voice heard in international forums and local community
- Tools and frameworks to influence pressing global issues on climate change and sustainability
- Action plans about how to implement an advocacy campaign on climate issues in your chosen space

Hermia Chan

Hermia Chan is a final-year Global Studies student at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Being born and raised in Hong Kong, Hermia noticed the absence of climate change education in Hong Kong secondary and tertiary curriculum. She therefore co-founded the Network of Environmental Student Societies (NESS) in early 2021, with an aim to increase youth participation and awareness in climate change and actions through a multi-disciplinary lens and perspectives.
John Sayer

Mr. John Sayer has a background in sustainability issues and human development, climate change advocacy, organizational management and governance policy. John was Executive Director of Asia Monitor Resource Centre working on information technology, labour rights and workplace health and safety before joining Oxfam Hong Kong in 1991 as Program Director and then Executive Director. In 2001 he moved to Oxford to take up the post of Executive Director of Oxfam International for an interim period. In 2003 he became Director of Africa Now, a development agency working on market-based solutions for small-scale producers in Africa through business development services, and the promotion of ethical trade among international companies doing business in Africa. In 2006, he returned to Asia and re-joined Oxfam Hong Kong as Director General until 2013. In January 2014, he joined the VSO as Director of its Asia Pacific Group, working to reduce poverty through programmes involving volunteers and international exchange. His published research has focused on business-NGO relations. He has served on the Board of the Ethical Trading Initiative helping major corporations develop socially responsible supply chains, particularly in the garment and food sectors. He has also served on the advisory body of the UN Global Compact on corporate conduct and is currently a member of the Global Reporting Initiative Stakeholder Council and a member of the Council's Capital Markets Discussion Group.
Marie-Claire Graf
Focal Point of YOUNGO, the UNFCCC and boarder UN
Ms. Marie-Claire Graf is a Swiss youth advocate, change maker and public speaker for just sustainable development and ambitious climate action through her diverse engagement in several initiatives on a local, national and international level. It’s her aspiration to inspire and empower youth to take meaningful, impactful and positive actions to create a momentum for change. She was initiating and is leading several associations and movements in the fields of climate action, sustainable development, youth and women empowerment and education such as the Sustainability Week International. She was elected to serve the youth constituency of the UNFCCC called YOUNGO and was a member of the Federal Swiss delegation to the UNFCCC COP25. She was lately named as a Champion to the UN Food Systems Summit and got different awards and prizes for her engagement such the United Nations Youth Climate Champion of Switzerland.
Yamide Dagnet
Director of Climate Negotiations, World Resources Institute
Yamide Dagnet is Director, Climate Negotiations at World Resources Institute (WRI). She leads projects and engagement on climate negotiations for the implementation of the Paris Agreement and the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change. Her work aims to advance the scaling-up of climate action and support, processes for transparent and verifiable climate data, accountability mechanisms for national commitments, and the necessary enabling, institutional and regulatory, and capacity building environments to transition toward a sustainable and fair zero-carbon and climate-resilient economy. While at WRI, Yamide has managed flagship projects such as ACT 2015 (Agreement for Climate Transformation 2015) on the design of the 2015 climate agreement and of the World Resources Institute's PACT (Project for Advancing Climate Transparency) on the design of guidelines and mechanisms for the implementation of the Paris Agreement, and she contributed to the Climate Justice Dialogue. Yamide brings more than 18 years of experience in advancing environmental objectives, having worked for the UK, French and Belgian governments, including as a policy lead and negotiator on the UNFCCC measurement, reporting and verification framework for the UK, as manager of the UK greenhouse gas inventory, as the UK Deputy Focal Point for the IPCC, as a reviewer under the UNFCCC of countries’ national communications, as the UK representative for the European standardization process for chemicals in contact with drinking water, and as France’s focal point for the EU neighborhood policy and twinning program. Yamide holds a Masters degree in Engineering from the University of Technology of Compiegne (France), with a minor in European studies and specialization in environment, security and quality insurance. In addition to English, she speaks French, Spanish, Portuguese and Creole.
Chung Sum Yue, Natalie
Co-Founder and Director, V’air Hong Kong
Natalie is the Co-Founder and Director of V’air Hong Kong. She was appointed by the Hong Kong Government as youth member at the Council for Sustainable Development, devising 2050 long-term decarbonisation strategy for Hong Kong. She is currently pursuing MPhil in Environmental Change and Management at University of Oxford.
Beatrice Tulagan

Beatrice Tulagan is a writer and a climate justice organizer exploring intersections of the personal and the political as we collectively confront the climate crisis, cultural shifts, and social politics. She is passionate about connecting activists towards intersectional organizing, movement-building and exploring what it means to genuinely stand in solidarity with each other's fights amidst societal and environmental shocks.
Beatrice is currently the Regional Organizer for 350.org in Asia, a climate organization working to build a future that's just, prosperous, equitable and safe from the effects of the climate crisis. Within and outside her work with 350, she organizes alongside Asian civil society organizations with a special focus on emerging youth organizations. She specializes in designing trainings and programs for climate and social justice. Her latest project in August 2021, the Asia Solidarity Lab -- a virtual gathering of movements to unite calls towards justice on all fronts and a just recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic -- was attended by over 600 participants from 50 countries.
Beatrice’s essays on COVID-19, gender, environmental justice, culture, and mental health have also appeared on OpenGlobalRights, Manila Standard, Asia Sentinel, and more. She has also contributed poetry and fiction to various publications.
Beatrice holds a Certificate in Public Narrative: Leadership, Storytelling, and Action from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, Executive Education. She was a former Fellow for FRIDA: The Young Feminist Fund and Climate Tracker. She is also currently a Fellow of Parabukas> and the Climate Advisor of Behaviorale.
Hahn Chu
Director of Environmental Advocacy, The Green Earth
Hahn has been engaging in environmental protection work for over 20 years and has taken the initiative in advocating waste reduction, especially in issues like producer responsibility, recycling, light pollution, etc. In recent years, he promotes citizen movements such as the “Take your litter home” campaign to care for the land. Hahn was a member of the Support Group on Waste Charging of the Council for Sustainable Development (2013 – 2014). In 2014, he received the Roadshow ECO Star Award (Professional Group). He holds a EMBA degree at Hong Kong University of Science and Technology and a master degree in Environment, Culture and Society at Lancaster University of UK. He is also an alumnus of the School of Journalism at National Chengchi University, Taiwan.

Samson Tong is the founder and chief creative officer of ECHO ASIA Communications. ECHO ASIA Communications was established in 2015. It is positioned as a sustainable enterprise, market brand and multimedia marketing, and is committed to developing and promoting sustainable development and low-carbon life in Hong Kong. He also established Mix Things Happen in 2021 which is a comprehensive, interactive and multifunctional social enterprise platform.
In 2020, he studied Business Sustainability Management at the University of Cambridge and won the 2020 Red Dot Design Award. Also, he has engaged in several brand management projects. His clients include Cathay Pacific, Bank of East Asia, the United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF), Oxfam, Li Ka Shing Foundation and the like. In addition, Samson and his team highly engage in volunteer activities to practice social responsibilities.
Mark Cheung

Mark is a year 3 undergraduate, majoring in Environmental Science and minoring in Politics at the University of Hong Kong. He is the Co-Founder of Network of Environmental Student Societies (NESS), a local youth-led organization that aims to enhance climate change awareness and capacity of youth. Mark is also selected as the official HK delegate of the ClimateForce 2041 Antarctica Expedition to observe real-time changes caused by climate change on a carbon-negative journey. With his learnings and experience, Mark aspires to empower youth and raise public awareness on climate actions as a speaker, advocate, and youth leader.
Mitzi Jonelle Tan
Youth Advocates, Climate Action Philippines(YACAP)
Mitzi Jonelle Tan is the convener and international spokesperson of Youth Advocates for Climate Action Philippines or YACAP. She is also active on Fridays for Future International, the international youth climate movement as YACAP's representative. YACAP is an alliance of individuals and student formations with unities of climate justice, immediate youth led collective climate action, defense of our environmental defenders, and system change.
Priscilla Lin
Co-founder, Solmunity
Graduating from Calvin University with a Bachelor’s degree of International Affairs, Priscilla works as a Sustainability Consultant at Carbon Care Asia. She is responsible for sustainability reporting and stakeholder engagement for listed companies in Hong Kong. Prior to CCA, Priscilla has extensive experience working in an international NGO sector and has co-founded an organization called The Shared Meal, which crowdsources meatless home-cooked recipes and memories, aiming to link climate to our everyday meals. As a climate advocate, she is a YOUNGO member and ran an initiative called Solmunity to promote community solar energy in Hong Kong previously. Also, she enjoys yoga and hiking in her spare time.
Application Procedures
Who can participate in the Climate Advocacy Training for Youth (CATY) programme?
- Will be aged between 18 and 35 on the date that you attend the training
- Hong Kong permanent identity card holder
- Can commit to our Climate Advocacy Training for Youth Programme on every Saturday for around 5 months from Nov 2021 to Mar 2022.
- Show enthusiasm in climate change, environmental and social justice issues and are passionate about making a positive difference to the society
- Want to be the driving force behind local and international climate issues
- Equipped with language, communication, problem-solving and leadership skills
- Committed to serving the Hong Kong community, preferably with commendable experience in volunteer or community service
