Solar InnoWorkshop X Caritas Cheng Shing Fung District Elderly Centre (Sham Shui Po) : DIY Solar Light Jar
CarbonCare Innolab is dedicated to promoting the use of renewable energy. It is intended that people from all sectors would gain a better understanding of climate change and the benefits of renewable energy. The target group today is the elderly with dementia disabilities.
We once again cooperated with Caritas Cheng Chengfeng Elderly Community Centre (Sham Shui Po) to hold a solar energy innovation workshop on October 18, 2021. There were 19 seniors and their caregivers in total that took part in the activity. We started it off by introducing climate change and solar energy, including the impact of climate change on the environment, ecology, and human health. Then we explained the reason why we should adopt renewable energy and how it has been utilised in Hong Kong.
Follow by the introduction, it was the painting session. A group of seniors started to paint on the solar light jar under our instructor’s careful instruction and the helper’s assistance. Some elderly could draw flower and leaf patterns, some could paint colours and some of them could even draw their ideas out, such as hearts or polka dots. During the time, some elderly raised questions about solar energy and some shared their experience of Hong Kong power outages in the late 80s. We have learnt from the centre’s staff that the elderly are much jubilant than usual as they actively responded to our questions.
At the end of the event, the elderly were taught to turn on the light jar. Most of them complimented on the light jar saying that it was perfectly splendid. The DIY light jar not only enables the elderly to understand the benefits of utilising solar energy but also captured the memories of the changing era.
