ATS: “Hang Seng Low Carbon Future– Low Carbon Schools” 2024/25 Academic Year Opening Ceremony

The “Hang Seng Low Carbon Future– Low Carbon Schools” programme, jointly organised by CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL) and Aberdeen Technical School (ATS), has entered its third year. The programme includes the installation of 80 solar PV panels at the school, enabling it to participate in the Hong Kong government’s Feed-in Tariff Scheme. The rebates from this scheme will support climate education at the school until the year 2033. As of May this year, ATS’s solar PV system has generated a cumulative total of 73,090 kWh—equivalent to the monthly electricity consumption of approximately 265 households.

On October 15, 2025, CCIL held the Opening Ceremony for the 2025/26 academic year's "Low Carbon Schools" programme at ATS, sharing climate change messages with students from Form 1 to Form 3 and previewing the year’s climate education activities.

Ms Gigi Lam, Programme Manager of CCIL, returned to speak again this year, continuing her theme of “heat.” This time, she discussed Hong Kong’s temperature records and warming trends. Building on last year’s focus on outdoor workers and extreme heat, she highlighted another climate-vulnerable group: residents of inadequate housing. She first explained what constitutes “inadequate housing,” then shared findings from the "Indoor Heat Survey for Inadequate Housing Units 2025", jointly released by CCIL and the Kwai Chung SDU Kai Fong Association. The report helped students understand how hot nights affect those living in inadequate housing. We hope this sharing will inspire students to pay attention to the injustices faced by vulnerable communities under climate change. This also echoes the Catholic core values of justice and charity.

In the coming year, CCIL will continue organising climate education activities for ATS, including solar ambassador training, "No Air-Con Night", the Climate Collage Game, the online quiz game, etc.
