Home Heat Combatting Actions(1)First Visit

Following up on last summer's heat survey, team CAFE has recently been in a series of Home Heat Combatting Actions. Apart from sub-divided units and rooftop flats that we often talked about, we are also putting our attention on the weather challenges faced by transition housings.

Over the last five years, 15000 modular transition housing flats have been built in Hong Kong. SDU residents moved in and benefitted from a significant improvement of living conditions. Yet, these MIC building structures are still facing climate challenges. The ability to withstand extreme heat and stormy weather, are still under observation.

Near the end of last year, we had students from Saint Francis University to visit the transitional social housing project “LMC Hub - Yip Shing”. Students exchanged views with the residents on the housing conditions and  how are they combatting the weather. The group explored energy-saving and heat-resistant methods, also visited resident homes to carry out a preparation survey for the heat combatting campaign. Residents got interested and shared with students the environmental actions they are running, such as the self-run recycling group and their organic garden. It was a fruitful exchange of ideas, and the residents are looking forward to the upcoming heat combatting actions to alleviate the summer heat at home.

Thanks to the active participation of student volunteers, we could work together with the community to find better climate adaptation strategies!
