CCIL x Peak Re Sustainability Hackathon

In mid-October, CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL), along with a group of Peak Re employees and students from the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), held a Sustainability Hackathon event for two consecutive days. The activity aimed to guide participants in using their knowledge and creativity to design solutions to alleviate the impacts of extreme heat. The judging panel consisted of representatives from Peak Re, HKUST, and CCIL.

At the beginning of the event, CCIL first led participants to share their experiences of encountering extreme heat, then explained the local situations of vulnerable groups such as residents in subdivided flats and outdoor workers during extreme heat. Participants were then divided into five groups. Through an "empathy map," they identified the target groups they wanted to assist and the problems they faced. This map helped them empathize with the target group's situation, identify pain points, and design appropriate solutions based on their needs.

Following this, each group had to conceptualize their ideas and present them to the judges and other participants in the form of models or presentations. Throughout the process, Peak Re employees provided guidance to students with their professional knowledge, ensuring that the solutions were practical, creative, and sustainable from various perspectives.

The pitching session took place on the morning of the second day of the event, where all five groups made efforts to introduce their proposals. Some groups showcased carefully crafted models, while others incorporated elements of role-playing.

After a discussion by the judging panel, the Hot Chocolate team, which designed cooling tools for village house residents, was ultimately crowned the champion.

CarbonCare InnoLab actively engage NGOs, businesses, policymakers, and youth in achieving a just transition to a low-carbon economy that respects and protects vulnerable communities. Through the Sustainability Hackathon, participants gained a deeper understanding of the increasingly severe climate change and the injustices it brings, making them more willing to engage in climate action and contribute to sustainable development.
