CarbonCare InnoLab X Hok Yau Club “Low Carbon Community Action - Sham Shui Po Light Replacement Action” Phase 2 Visit

CarbonCare InnoLab and Hok Yau Club organized phase two of "Low Carbon Community Action - Sham Shui Po Light Replacement Action” on July 23. With the assistance of 30 volunteers, we replaced more than 100 LED bulbs and light tubes for 24 households in the public estate. Through conversing with the households during the phase one visit, we gathered some useful information about their needs and their living conditions. Afterwards, we prepared the suitable LED lights and invited some volunteers to install LED lights for the households. For the phase one visit, we went to the public estate for measuring environmental data and preparing for phase two visit. The data like the types of light tubes which they are using or their needs, help to facilitate phase two visit. Meanwhile we shared the energy benefits of using LED lights to promote environmental protection concepts such as low-carbon life as well as waste reduction and recycling, and also raise their awareness of this aspect.

Before the light replacement action, the volunteers reviewed the precautions for changing the light, the use of instruments and related arrangements according to different groups under the reminder of our staff and team leaders. Afterwards, we and volunteers went to various units to carry out light replacement action with the tools needed for light replacement.

Apart from brightening up the living environment, the durable LED light bulbs and light tubes also maintain a high energy efficiency. After several visits for data collection, it is discovered that the durable LED light bulbs and light tubes not only brighten up the living environment, but also maintain a higher energy efficiency. Many elders agree that this activity can increase their awareness of climate change, for example only LED lights will be used in the future. Moreover, several volunteers said that this activity was meaningful, not only to deepen communication and understanding with the elderly, but also to understand the importance of replacing LED lights to the environment. As climate change has been adversely affecting the subdivided flat households, it is crucial and urgent to improve their living environment. After the visit, we collected and recycled the used light bulbs and light tubes at Cheung Sha Wan Green Community in order to reduce the wastes.

The “Low Carbon Community Action - Sham Shui Po Light Replacement Action” has been successfully concluded, it successfully replaced more than 20 public housing households with more energy-saving and brighter LED lights. We are looking forward to having more elderly people living alone and subdivided housing households will benefit from this program in this year.
