Education Hike: Climate Discovery 2016@Tai O
Date: 6th November, 2016 (Sunday)
Route: Tai O Road > Keung Shan Country Trail >Lung Tsai Ng Yuen > Lantau Trail > Tai O Community > Tai O Rural Committee Square
“Education Hike: Climate Discovery 2016@Tai O” was held on 6 November. Blessed with sunny weather and a pleasant autumn breeze, the hike was a great success. Ir Lee Chi Ming, Board Chairman of CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL), Ir Albert Lai, Advisor of CCIL and Mr Charles Mok, Legislative Councillor were among the many participants. After warming up at the starting-point, all participants followed the Keung Shan Country Trail and Lantau Trail to hike for about 2 hours. They stopped to admire the Lung Tsai Ng Yuen heritage before finishing the walk in Tai O centre. A number of educational checkpoints were set up along the way to let participants learn about climate change, ecological conservation and measures of disaster prevention in Tai O. For example, Wing On Street in Tai O centre was one of the worst affected spots in town when Tai O was hit by Typhoon Hagupit in 2008 and Typhoon Koppuin in 2009. The government has installed flood prevention panels along Wing On Street afterwards to mitigate flood damage caused by typhoons. At another checkpoint which focused on sustainable fisheries and the fishing industry of Tai O, participants took part in a “fish catching” game, through which they came to understand the importance of sustainable fishing. A closing ceremony was held after the hike at the Tai O Rural Committee Square, where everybody enjoyed Tai O delicacies such as ‘tea dumpling’ and lemon tea from local stores after CCIL chairman and guests shared their experience from the hike. We also invited Celia, founder of Grebbish, to set up a wet & dry recycling station and to demonstrate how waste recycling should be done.
We are deeply grateful to the many organizations for their generous sponsorship and support to this fund raising activity. After deducting the necessary costs, all proceeds received will be used to support the operation of CCIL in developing programs to tackle climate change in Hong Kong.
