Aberdeen Technical School: Climate Fresk
On 7 May 2025, CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL) organised a Climate Fresk workshop for students at Aberdeen Technical School to help them understand the complex causes and impacts of climate change through interactive gameplay.
Climate change is one of the major crises we face today. However, the knowledge involved is complicated, covering a range of fields such as geography, chemistry, biology, etc. Also, the causes and effects of climate change are often interrelated. The “Climate Fresk,” introduced from France, uses an interesting and engaging approach to help us understand how human activities contribute to the climate crisis in an easier way.
On the day, 50 Form 3 students participated. They were divided into eight groups, with each group receiving a set of cards describing the causes and effects of climate change for them to sort. With the addition of a different set of cards for each round of the game, the difficulty level increased gradually. Students needed to carefully consider the causal relationships between different cards. Throughout the process, students could learn the concepts about climate change through the written explanations on the back of the cards, allowing them to learn in a fun way and gain deeper insight into the complex interrelationships involved. The students were highly engaged throughout the game. At the end of the workshop, students were able to point out that humans reap what they sow, which encapsulates the key message we hope students take away from this game.
We hope that, beyond recognising the negative consequences human actions can have on the environment, students were also inspired to try their best to help slow climate change and choose a low-carbon lifestyle, preventing the “ending of the story” depicted by their card combinations from becoming reality.
