[Beat the Heat in Tiny Homes] Community Climate Resilience: "Appliance Regeneration" Home Safety and Repair Workshop
Electronic waste is growing at an alarming rate. In Hong Kong, an average of over 70,000 tonnes of e-waste is discarded across the city every year. This waste not only occupies scarce landfill space but also releases large amounts of greenhouse gases during manufacturing and disposal, exacerbating global climate change.
To drive change from grassroots communities, CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL) collaborated with RepairCaféHK on July 8, 2026, to organise the "Appliance Regeneration" Home Safety and Repair Workshop at the Hong Kong Women Workers’ Association (HKWWA) Community Living Studio. With "Everyday Climate Resilience" at its core, the event aimed to enhance neighbours' skills in extending appliance lifespans and increasing household energy efficiency, thereby tightening the community mutual aid network.

1. Repair Over Waste: Transitioning to a Circular Economy
While large household appliances are regulated under the local legal framework for recycling, small household appliances (such as fans, electric kettles, etc.) are often discarded casually due to minor faults. This project regards "Repair" as an important practice of the 6Rs environmental concept, guiding the public to break the linear consumption model of "buying as soon as it breaks" and turn towards a circular economy model where resources flow continuously, cutting off carbon emissions from the source. -
2. Smart Energy Saving: Optimising Fan Efficiency
Facing the scorching weather brought by climate change, over-reliance on air conditioning leads to high electricity bills and a severe vicious cycle. Maintaining the optimal operating state of electric fans can effectively promote indoor air convection and drastically pull down the overall power consumption of air conditioning. The workshop taught correct fan maintenance techniques to ensure appliances operate at maximum efficiency, saving electricity bills while saving the planet. -
3. Community Mutual Aid: From Beneficiaries to Contributors
Climate resilience cannot be achieved alone; it requires weaving a neighbourhood network. This activity encourages neighbours, after mastering repair skills, to proactively inspect and repair appliances for elderly people or low-income families in need within the community, or to match and donate idle, fully functional second-hand appliances from the public, establishing a resilient community mutual aid system.
Hands-on Focus: "Repairability" and the "Safety Line of Defence" Through Fan Repair
In the interactive practical segment, under the guidance of volunteer masters, neighbours successfully brought several stalled small household appliances back to "life".

Introduction to Fan Restoration: Neighbours first focused on learning troubleshooting for electric fans. As fans are the most common cooling appliance in every household, the instructors explained the operating principles of fan motors, capacitors, and bearings in simple terms, and guided everyone to safely disassemble fan blades and guards for deep cleaning, regaining the fans' original air delivery efficiency.

Establishing Diagnostic Awareness of "Repairable" vs "Hazardous to Keep": The workshop laid special emphasis on safety assessment, teaching neighbors how to judge the degree of damage to appliances:

What situations can be fixed? If it is just dust accumulation blocking heat dissipation, dry bearings, or an ageing capacitor (I.e., causing the fan to start up slowly), these all fall within the safe repairable range.

What situations can absolutely NOT be used/fixed? If the internal motor coils are severely burnt (emitting a foul odour or showing charred blackening), the outer casing is melted and deformed due to overheating, or internal wires are severely degraded and broken with risks of leakage, these are situations with major safety hazards and must not be used again. This allows neighbours to reduce waste while firmly maintaining the bottom line of household electrical safety.

Household Wiring Structure: Understanding the anti-electric shock safety functions of three-core wires (Live-Brown, Neutral-Blue, Earth-Yellow/Green stripes) and the potential hazards of using non-standard adapters.

Precise Fuse Calculation: Learning to read appliance specification labels and using the electrical power formula P(w)=I x V to calculate the appropriate fuse amperage (such as 3A, 5A, 13A) for the appliance, preventing fires caused by overloads.

Daily Non-toxic Descaling: Teaching the use of environmentally friendly and safe citric acid to regularly remove scale from electric kettles to maintain heating efficiency.
