Solar Future Challenge 2024 Event Highlights

On March 9, 2024, the "Jockey Club SolarCare Project: Solar Future Challenge" organised by CarbonCare InnoLab took place at the Data Technology Hub. This initiative aims to promote climate justice in Hong Kong by encouraging young people to creatively integrate solar energy into daily life, assist climate-affected groups, and address the disproportionate impacts faced by vulnerable communities.

The competition featured 15 teams competing across three categories: the "Solar Supreme Group" (senior secondary group), the "Solar Legend Group" (junior secondary group), and the "Solar Elite Group" (primary group). The teams vied for 9 awards, with judging based on four criteria: "Innovation," "Impactful," "Feasibility," and "Presentation".

The total amount of prize money is HK$104,000, this money will be awarded to the winning teams to further develop their device and showcase their winning work online. Entries showcased remarkable creativity, including multifunctional solar wheelchairs, Solar Ice Machine, Solar Water Purifier, Blacktain, among others.

Esteemed judges for the competition included Mr. Chong Chan Yau (Co-founder and CEO of CarbonCare InnoLab), Dr. Tong Shiu Sing (Senior Lecturer of Physics, The Chinese University of Hong Kong), Ir Raymond Ho (Founder of RewnewHK.net), and Mr. Ringo Mak (Programme Advisor of CarbonCare InnoLab, Co-Founder of 350HK).

During the opening speech, Mr. Chong Chan Yau, Co-founder and CEO of CarbonCare InnoLab, emphasised the importance of climate justice and the need to remember disadvantaged communities affected by climate change. He urged participants to work towards creating a fair and equitable society.

Their ingenious methods of integrating solar energy into daily routines enhance the accessibility of renewable energy for the general population. The Solar Future Challenge aims to showcase and promote the winning products and teams, facilitating an exhibition of the awarded innovations online at this website. This exhibition will be offering an opportunity to raise awareness and educate people about renewable energy solutions. Our goal is to inspire individuals to incorporate solar energy into their everyday lives.

By showcasing these innovative solutions, we seek to foster students' STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) spirit and nurture their ability to explore alternative approaches.
