The 5th Cohort of the CATY Community Climate Advocacy Project Presentation
The 5th Cohort of the CATY Community Climate Advocacy Project Presentation concluded successfully on 20th July 2024. This event brought together experts to provide valuable advice and guidance for young climate advocates. Mr. Chong Chen Yau, Co-founder and CEO of the CarbonCare InnoLab, emphasised the "Climate Justice" issue caused by climate change and urged everyone to pay attention to the challenges faced by disadvantaged communities in the climate crisis. In addition to Mr. Chong, we invited Mr. Ray Yeung, an environmental policy advocate, Mr. Chan Kim Ching, a researcher from the Liber Research Community, and Ms. Kristy Chow, an environmental and land policy expert, as the commentators provided valuable opinions and suggestions for the students' advocacy projects.
In the youth climate advocacy training course, students gained valuable experience from experts and enhanced their advocacy capabilities and communication skills through various workshops. Four youth teams shared their community climate advocacy plan during the presentation session. These plans included:
CyclePunk: Promote cycling as the primary low-carbon travel mode in Tseung Kwan O District (IG: cyclepunk_hk)
EarthWise: Promote local climate change education (IG: earthwise_hk)
FlashTrash: Promote temporary flash bazaars in Hong Kong to revamp waste management strategies and minimise waste (IG: flashtrash.hk)
Transtinue: Focus on the design of bus stops to combat the climate crisis (IG: transtinue)
During the presentation, each group openly shared the challenges and lessons they encountered during the implementation process. Their enthusiasm and creativity impressed the guests. The expert commentators not only provided affirmation and suggestions but also shared their own valuable experiences, injecting new ideas into the students' initiative plans.
We also invited Mr. Ray Yeung to share his experiences in promoting environmental initiatives in Hong Kong with the participants. He provided advice on effectively using the media to spread information and shared his personal journey. He emphasised that climate advocacy is about changing hearts and encouraged participants to remember that "Completing is more important than perfect" on the long journey of climate advocacy.
This training program has reached the quarter mark of its course, marking the start for a group of young climate advocates. In just a few months, they have demonstrated impressive planning and execution capabilities. In the future, they will continue to promote their initiative plans in the community. CarbonCare InnoLab will select outstanding students to attend the United Nations Climate Change Conference in November 2024, allowing the voices of Hong Kong's youth to be heard internationally. Let us look forward to their growth and development in the future, contributing their part to tackling the climate crisis.
