The 3rd Climate Advocacy Training for Youth (CATY) Climate Change Community Project Presentation & 2nd and 3rd CATY Graduation Ceremony has been held successfully
CarbonCare InnoLab (CCIL) has successfully held the 3rd Climate Advocacy Training for Youth (CATY) Climate Change Community Project Presentation & 2nd and 3rd CATY Graduation Ceremony in the Breakthrough Youth Village, on Saturday, 6th August 2022. In the 3rd CATY, we have 18 graduates who have completed a series of 7 courses themed on climate advocacy. Climate advocacy, local and international cases of it, international climate conventions and organizations, skills of media, communication and persuasive speech were covered in the course to equip students with the knowledge and skills of initiating and implementing an effective climate advocacy campaign.
After seven lessons, under the supervision of four mentors, CATY students were divided into four groups to initiate and implement their community climate advocacy projects within 3 months. They have interviewed relevant stakeholders and experts to comprehend the climate change issues, conducted public opinion research and press conferences, utilized social media to promote their initiatives. They also wrote and submitted a position paper to the Hong Kong government and relevant stakeholders.
Students were invited to share the outcomes of their climate advocacy project. Judges were also invited to comments on their projects and guide them on ways to improve and promote their initiatives in the future. CCIL mentors and judges gave a firm acknowledgement to students’ efforts and outstanding performance of their initiatives. They were glad to see them bringing new energy to the local youth climate action. They encouraged students to continue their initiative after the training and keep engaging in international youth climate action. The four groups of community climate advocacy projects include:
Project Titles:
Packular - Promote circular packaging (IG: packular_hk)
Re-Market HK - Encourage plastic reduction (IG: remarkethk)
Empower - Solve energy poverty (IG: empower_hk)
CarbonProcurementDepartment - Promote green procurement (IG: cpd.hkg)
Due to the fifth wave of the pandemic during the end of the 2nd CATY, the graduation ceremony of the 2nd CATY was postponed and held on the same day of the 3rd CATY graduation ceremony. After the 3rd CATY students finished sharing their results and outcomes of the climate change community projects, we were honoured to invite Mr. Chong Chan Yau, co-founder and CEO of CCIL, and judges to award the certificates to the graduates of the 2nd and 3rd CATY. It also created a precious chance for the graduates of the 2nd and 3rd CATY to exchange their view on climate issues and learn from each climate change community project.
Mr. Chong Chan Yau shared, co-founder and CEO of CCIL, “given that the death-threatening and intolerable temperature rise in Hong Kong these days, in which some have even broken the past records. It becomes paramount to cope with climate change. Hence, the importance of climate advocacy should be highlighted. Despite the plight, I am pleased to have a group of talented young people in Hong Kong who are passionate about climate advocacy in promoting more ambitious climate actions.
“Hong Kong youth need to strive for promoting climate justice in Hong Kong. Climate change has threatened vulnerable groups in Hong Kong, including people living in the subdivided flats and outdoor workers. Therefore, we should embrace climate justice in Hong Kong, so well as move towards the goal of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.”
Aside from this, Mr. Mark Cheung, who was one of the CCIL’s Youth Delegates to the 26th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP26) last year and Mr. Ryan Yip, who is Yout Delegate to COP27 this year, has encouraged our graduates not only to advocate climate change locally, but also to engage in climate action at the international level. Youth can reinforce the global commitment to limiting the temperature rise within 1.5 degrees Celsius and promoting more ambitious climate actions.
Although the 3rd CATY has came to an end, it is another start for our graduates to engage in climate advocacy in both local and international levels. Besides, CCIL will shortlist outstanding graduates to participate in the 27th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP27), which is going to be held in Sharm El Sheikh, Egypt in November 2022. They would be able to witness the climate agreement negotiations of country leaders across the world, and voice their opinions upon climate change issues, to contribute to international climate actions.
