Hong Kong Climate Action Network for Youth (HK-CANY) Small Grant

The Hong Kong Climate Action Network for Youth (HK-CANY) Small Grant initiative is designed to empower Climate Advocacy Training for Youth (CATY) alumni by helping them turn their ideas into tangible actions that combat climate change. Recognising the difficulties faced by youth-led organisations in obtaining funding, particularly at the beginning of their climate initiatives, we are committed to supporting them on their climate journey. This commitment is exemplified through the launch of the HK-CANY Small Grant, which offers financial support to CATY alumni, enabling them to materialise their ideas.

This platform empowers young people to design and lead their own initiatives, creating tangible impact on local climate action in Hong Kong

The public transport is well-developed in Hong Kong, yet the concept of “last mile” is unpopular. By making good use of the cycling network, it helps build a low-carbon city.

With the support of HK-CANY, my team and I can put our climate ideas into practice and turn them into concrete actions in the community. This platform empowers young people to design and lead their own initiatives, creating tangible impact on local climate action in Hong Kong

I had the invaluable opportunity to advocate for meaningful youth involvement

Participating in the negotiation-focused SB60 was an incredible experience in my climate journey. I learned so much—from the technicality of each and every wording in official negotiation documents, to how civil society and youth can engage in the process, which I had the invaluable opportunity to advocate for meaningful youth involvement in NDC 3.0. This experience has significantly improved my understanding of climate policy, analysing negotiation documents, and advocacy efforts. More importantly, I had the chance to collaborate with fellow youth climate advocates from all over the world, working together to push forward the climate negotiation agenda while learning from each other's experiences to apply in our own countries. I extend my heartfelt thanks to CCIL and the sponsors for this precious experience. As a co-founder of GenC, I will continue to work hard to connect and empower Hong Kong youth in climate negotiations!

It is encouraging to see the work we have been doing does make an impact on the community - every small step matters

I care about people’s climate resilience in urban settings. As HealingParks’ co-founder, I also want to strive for better urban parks so we all can enjoy without going to country parks.

With the financial support from the small grant, we were able to standardise and scale up our park tour workshop which inspired people who were new to climate change and parks. It is encouraging to see the work we have been doing does make an impact on the community - every small step matters.

Empowerment Through Impact: Finding Growth and Community in the HK-CANY Network

From participating in the CATY program to becoming a mentor for the later cohorts, I believe witnessing my own growth through spending extra effort and time to aid others in their journey is an act of empowerment itself. Belonging in a network full of enthusiastic talented youth has also kept me mentally supported when helplessness and frustration kicks in when looking at climate issues. I think it is more than a network, it is also acting as a support system for us youth too!

The Programme has helped me discover my passion for climate policy

I had the incredible opportunity to attend COP26, where I gained insights into youth empowerment and climate action. This experience not only inspired my work with my youth organisation, NESS, but also helped me discover my passion for climate policy, motivating me to pursue a master’s in public policy to make a greater impact.

HK-CANY actively encourages alumni to explore diverse policy areas. When I shifted my focus to carbon market policy, their support extended to offering me a badge to attend SB60, where I closely followed the Article 6 negotiations. The friendships I’ve made with like-minded peers through HK-CANY have been equally enriching. I highly recommend anyone passionate to make a difference!
