Webinar #5: Everybody invests in Solar Energy: Taiwan Case Studies

Replacing the burning of fossil fuels with renewable energy for electricity generation is an efficient way to mitigate climate change. In 2018, the Hong Kong government initiated the Feed-in Tariff (FiT) scheme which encourages the usage of renewable energy. Individuals and orgnisations could get rebate by installing solar panels or wind turbines and selling the electricity generated to the two power companies in Hong Kong. Since the launching of the scheme, the two power companies have received quite a number of applications from the public. However, those with limitations of space and resources for investment may also want to engage in the scheme.

Taiwan has gone far beyond us. They have implemented the FiT since 2009, and there are some non-governmental organisations organising progammes that allow public engagement for the scheme. To get an idea of their approaches, we have invited representatives from two organisations in Taiwan to share with us.

Green Advocates Energy Co-operative is a civic organisation that promotes clean energy. They believe mutual investment in renewable energy is what citizens can do to mitigate climate change. Sunny Founder is the largest public invested power plant in Taiwan. It provides various ways for public to engage in green investment. Could these two Taiwan cases be a reference to us?

Ms Hwang, Shu-te, Supervisor of Homemakers Union Consumers Co-operative and Mr Hsiao-Ju Feng (Edison), co-founder and CEO of Sunnyfounder , shared with us their public investment solar projects. We hope these two cases would be an inspiration to us on how to encourage public engagement in promoting renewable energy. You are welcome to watch the recording here (in Mandarin):

Speaker Profile:

Ms Hwang, Shu-te, Supervisor of Homemakers Union Consumers Co-operative and Chairman of Green Advocates Energy Co-operative. She completed her master of Public Health degree in University of Michigan and joined Homemakers United Foundation 27 years ago. Since then, she has begun engaging in NGO starting from being a volunteer, and has become an entrepreneur of co-operative start-up. Through engaging in environment movements, she started learning more about the subjects of organic farming, fair trade, energy resources and aging.

Mr Hsiao-Ju Feng (Edison), Co-founder and CEO of Sunnyfounder, Mr Hsiao-Ju Feng (Edison), Co-founder and CEO of Sunnyfounder, graduated from National Taiwan University with a Master degree in Mechanical Engineering. The field of his study focuses on the reserach of solar photovoltaic materials, and he possess 1-years of professional practice and experience in project management and market development. He has been nominated as a speaker at TEDx and was awarded as 2018 Taiwan Top 100MVP Managers by Manager Today Magazine.

In 2015, Edison and several partners developed the first, and so far, the largest green energy crowdfunding platform in Taiwan- Sunnyfounder, which provides the service that effortlessly enables the general public to be not only electricity consumers but also producers and profited with economic value as well.
