What would you do to get away from the heat of summer? Sleeping in an air-conditioned room? Having a cup of iced drinks? Or unleash your creativity in making a unique solar light?
On 2 July 2020, 25 participants gathered at the Boys’ & Girls’ Clubs Association of Hong Kong Ma On Shan East Children & Youth Integrated Services Centre to make their own solar lights. With the guidance of instructors, participants unleash their creativity to design and draw unique patterns on their lights. They all found great pleasure with lots of fun and laughter.
The beginning is always the hardest, one of the participants says, “it’s most difficult to draw the outline. I need to push quite hard to get the paint out. However, when I started to mix the colours and painting, seeing the prototype of the light gives me a great sense of accomplishment”. Finally, the solar panel has been installed. At the moment when the lights turn on, the participant is deeply touched, “finally finished! I’ve never imagined I can make a solar product by myself.” Some participants said they can’t wait to go home and try it, others plan to take it for adventures in the forest, some other participants plan to give it to their mother as a birthday present.
Within just two hours, all participants started from scratch, drawing their own design and assembling different parts on their own to create a unique solar light. It’s not only a memorable experience but also helps them recognize the importance of environmental protection and learn to make good use of solar energy for energy saving and carbon reduction.
